If you are wondering how to water your sod, here are our best tips.

Having new sod installed at your property is exciting, as it allows you to enjoy a beautiful, green, lush lawn. However, proper sod maintenance is essential to ensure that your sod takes to your yard properly and continues growing. If you are wondering how to water your sod, here are our best tips.

Understand the Rooting Process

Before you can water your sod, it’s important to understand the rooting process for new sod. Generally, it takes 10 to 14 days for new sod to root, providing that the installation and the sod maintenance have been completed properly. Because the roots are shallower during this period, the watering schedule will differ and require you to take care of the sod more intensively. This helps prevent roots from drying out and ensures your new sod takes root.

When to Water Your New Sod

As part of the sod maintenance for your new sod, you should start the watering process immediately. After the installation is complete, water it for at least 45 minutes. This lets the sod get plenty of moisture to start rooting. If you do not provide it with enough water right away, the roots can already start to dry up, and they may struggle to root into the soil. After the initial 45 minutes, you should water the sod for at least 20 minutes three times a day for the first few weeks. Make sure that you regularly evaluate the sod to ensure things are on track.

Can You Overwater Your Sod?

New sod requires a great deal of water, so some homeowners try to overcompensate by watering more than necessary. Unfortunately, this can do more harm than good. Make sure that you follow the preferred sod watering schedule and check regularly to ensure that the top 3 to 4 inches stay moist but does not feel soaking wet to the touch. Too much water can stop the sod from establishing properly.
