Here are our tips on what to consider before you begin your sod installation.
Transforming your lawn with fresh sod is one of the fastest and most effective ways to achieve a lush, green yard. But before you order pallets of grass, there are a few key things every homeowner should know to make sure the project goes smoothly. Here are our tips on what to consider before you begin your sod project.
Timing is Critical
Fresh sod is a perishable, living product. Once it’s harvested, the clock is ticking. Sod should be installed the same day it’s delivered, whenever possible. Leaving pallets of sod sitting for more than 24 hours, especially in the summer heat, can lead to drying, overheating, and turf loss.
Know Your Yard Size and Sod Requirements
Before placing an order, carefully measure your lawn area to determine how many sod pallets you’ll need. One pallet typically covers 500 square feet. Having exact measurements prevents delays and costly overages.
Prepare the Soil
Sod won’t thrive if it’s simply rolled out over compacted dirt. Your soil should be loosened, leveled, and enriched with a few inches of quality topsoil. This creates the best root-to-soil contact and helps sod establish quickly.
Choose the Right Sod Variety
Not all sod is the same. In the Northeast, most homeowners choose between Kentucky Bluegrass or Tall Fescue, depending on how much sun, shade, and foot traffic their lawn receives.
Plan for Watering and Maintenance
New sod requires frequent watering during the first 2–3 weeks until roots are established. That means planning ahead for sprinkler coverage, hose length, and daily watering schedules. After establishment, different sod types have different maintenance needs.
Trust the Professionals for Installation
While many homeowners install sod themselves, hiring experts ensures the sod is laid quickly and correctly. This reduces stress on the grass and gives your lawn the best chance for long-term success.
