New sod is one of the best ways to perk up a brand-new property or to reverse damaged or dying turf.

New sod is one of the best ways to perk up a brand-new property or to reverse damaged or dying turf on an existing property. However, once the sod installation has been completed, you must dedicate some time and effort to proper sod maintenance. Here are some of our best tips to help you care for your new sod with ease.

Mow With Care

It can be tempting to baby your new sod after sod installation is complete, but properly mowing new sod is important to encourage lateral growth. Once the surface of the sod is able to connect with the dirt underneath it, it is safe to start mowing. Make sure you always mow using a mower with sharp blades and never remove more than 1/3 of the grass height in one mowing session.

Proper Watering

New sod comes to you ready to install. As a result, some moisture remains in the soil, the roots, and the grass itself. However, once sod installation is completed, watering will be critical to your early sod maintenance. The two best ways to water new sod are in-ground irrigation systems and traditional sprinklers.

If you are fortunate enough to have irrigation systems on your property, set up watering so that the sod will be completely saturated through the top inch of soil. It is best to water in the morning and evening to prevent rapid evaporation. Once you notice the roots starting to penetrate the soil, you can scale back your watering.

If you use a sprinkler to water your sod, you have the advantage of portability. You can adjust the specific position of your sprinkler to irrigate the new sod best. Make sure that you check the output of the sprinkler first. Additionally, you should be prepared to adjust your portable sprinkler’s position to ensure proper coverage happens all over the surface of the new sod.
