6 Tips to Make An Eco-Friendly Backyard Landscape Quantico & Creek

Similarly, you can replace some of the lawns in your backyard with drought-resistant varieties.

Landscaping does not always need to be expensive and unfriendly to the environment. Indeed, the current world demands that we be smarter when gardening, farming, or using natural resources. The need for environmental conservation and sustainability is at its optimum today. Follow these tips to make an eco-friendly backyard.

Go For Native Plants

Additionally, native plants are the way to go when looking for trees to plant in your backyard:

  1. The plants are well-adapted to the local climate and soils.
  2. Indigenous plants require little maintenance as they can resist pests and diseases.
  3. These plants provide food and habitat for insects, birds, and other small animals which prey and reduce destructive pests.

Try Xeriscape Landscaping

Xeriscaping is the act of designing your landscape with drought-resistant plants. This practice aims to reduce or get rid of irrigation and save on water bills. One way of xeriscape landscaping is to put plants with equal water needs together for adequate watering. Similarly, you can replace some of the lawns in your backyard with drought-resistant varieties.

Mulching Your Landscape

Mulching is the process of using dry organic material to cover the soil. It provides several benefits, including reduction of evaporation, moisture retention, prevention of soil erosion, and inhibition of weed growth. Grass lawns require much water, but mulching your landscape can prevent evaporation and retain moisture, reducing water usage.

Recycle Organic Waste

The simplest and eco-friendly way to deal with organic waste is by recycling, also known as composting. This way, you will reduce garbage and make organic manure that you can use in your home garden. To start your compost, you need to set a compost pit/bin in a warm area. Then be adding garden and household wastes into your pit. Additionally, your compost can be ready for use in six months, depending on the climatic conditions.

Keep Your Grass High & Dry

When you mow the lawn at a considerably high level, it will retain more water and stay lively. Also, leave your lawn cuttings on the turf. The fresh and moist grass clippings will not add nitrogen but also l keep your lawn moist. Alternatively, you add the clippings to your compost.

Plant Ground Cover Instead Of Grass

Compared to grass lawns, the ground cover offers numerous advantages. Ground cover clings the ground and doesn’t require much mowing, supplemental watering, or pesticides or herbicides. Moss provides a lovely lawn in shady regions. Even in the scorching heat of July, moss remains green and feels good under bare feet. Clover is an excellent groundcover for full-sun lawns. It retains its green color during droughts, has a pleasant scent, is soft and cushiony underfoot, and helps to minimize soil compaction. Allowing your clover grass to blossom to attract bees is a great way to provide a habitat for them.
